Members of Katsu dojo are required to undergo karate examinations in order to advance to the next kyu (grade). The exam consists of 4 parts; theory, practical, stamina and kumite (sparring). Failing in any one part will mean failing for the whole exam.
The exam requirements for each kyu are stated in the karate booklet given upon registration. For the theory exam, all exam participants are required to know the English translation of all the Japanese
names related to the kyu they are going for.
Katsu Dojo will hold 4 exams annually, 1 every quarter. For the adults the exam will generally be held on a Saturday for theory and practical tests, and the next week’s Tuesday for stamina and kumite. For the kids the exam will generally be held on a Saturday for practical tests, stamina and kumite.
